In keeping with the tradition of hiddur mitzvah - the beautification of ritual acts which has been the center of Jewish decorative arts through the ages the Torah Project has extended its program of restoration of the HJC's Sifrei Torah to the Aron Kodesh (ark) itself, so that the newly restored scrolls will not be placed in badly worn Torah mantles.
A special committee chaired by Vicki, after reviewing off-the-shelf offerings of catalog companies and original work of many Judaica artists, has chosen Jeanette Kuvin Oren to create and execute original designs for a new parokhet (ark curtain), six Torah covers and a beyn gavra (a reading cover placed over the Sefer Torah between aliyot) for the HJC. Ms. Oren is a internationally known Judaic fabric artist. Her work has been featured in Jewish Art in America and in many United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism calendars. Her recent commissions include Torah covers and ark curtains for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
