Happy Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving for all of us is a holiday for expressing our gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy as Americans. We have enclosed a few suggestions for expressing our gratefulness for our good fortune and wish and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving.

  1. It is especially appropriate to begin the Thanksgiving meal with the Motzi.

    Motzi

    Baruch Atah Adonai Elohanu Melach HoOlom. HaMotzi Lechem Min HaAretz.

    Praised are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe who brings forth bread from the earth.

  2. Go around the dinner table and ask each child or adult to share something for which they are thankful. This may feel awkward the first year, but can soon become a meaningful part of Thanksgiving dinner.

  3. At the dinner table share stories of how your finally arrived in America as well as other family history. You may want to tell how you or the family celebrated Thanksgiving in the past. If not for this year then for next, obtain a copy of the book or video Molly's Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen (Lothrop, Lee & Shepard). It is the beautiful story of a Jewish immigrant schoolgirl who is asked to make a pilgrim. doll for school and brings a doll dressed like her immigrant mother. Everyone learns something new about the meaning of a "Pilgrim."

  4. Come as a family to Huntington's Community Thanksgiving Service on Wednesday evening, November 27, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. at Temple Beth El (660 Park Avenue, Huntington). This is the one time in the year when all of us - Jews and Christians - join together in a spirit of common worship. It is wonderful for our children to share in expressions of common worship and to understand in a warm and deep way what we share with our non-Jewish friends and neighbors.

  5. Read Psalm 100 at the table or at an appropriate time during the day.

PSALM 100

A Psalm of Thanksgiving.

Sing unto the Lord in thanksgiving
Acclaim Him with joy, all the earth.

Serve the Lord with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.
Know that the Lord is God;
He made us, and we are His;
We are His people, the flock He shepherds.

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
and into His courts with praise;
Give thanks unto Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His lovingkindness endures forever;
His faithfulness is unto all generations.
