The committee organizes a number of programs through the year to accomplish those goals. Some events are relatively long-standing, such as the Hanukkah party, while others, such as the fall picnic, are recent additions. The committee, through its members and in contact with others in the synagogue community, is always looking for new ideas and new ways to celebrate Jewish traditions.
The first Family Life program for 5763 will be the annual "Lulav Shake." All those affiliated with HJC will receive materials about how to order a Lulav and Etrog set for Sukkot. The pickup date for those ordered is Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7 PM.
Next will come the 2nd annual picnic on Sunday, Oct. 20, which follows on the success of last year's. It will once again be held at Elwood Park, and there will be food, games and a friendly social atmosphere. This event last year served as a great way for newer and older members to meet.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, we will have our first Havdalah program of the year. There will be three this year; all will start at 4 p.m. and include the traditional light meal, time for study with the rabbi, singing and then the Havdalah service. Separate programming will be included for children of all ages, including baby-sitting.
On Thursday, Dec. 5, we will have our popular Hanukkah party, with food and a communal menorah lighting.
The second Havdalah program will be on Saturday, Dec. 21, and the third will be on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003.
On Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, there will be the Super Bowl party that is becoming an annual fixture of fun and good spirit (no matter who you're rooting for).
Sunday, May 4, 2003 will bring the fourth annual Mitzvah Day. HJC members of all ages will join together again that day for a variety of community service projects both within and outside the synagogue.
On Sunday, June 1, 2003 we will again march and watch the Israel Day parade in New York City. Last year brought a surge in participation.
The final currently scheduled event of the year will be Friday, June 6, 2003 when newborns (children less than one year old) will be welcomed during Shavuot services.
The Family Life Committee meets several times during the year to plan events and consider new ideas. All are welcome to the meetings, which are scheduled for the evenings of Oct. 2, Nov. 6, Feb. 11 and April 2. For more information about the committee and its plans, as well as for information about becoming involved, contact either of the co-chairs, Andrea or Vicki.
