OUR HISTORY

Huntington was settled in 1653, however, our synagogue history began in 1903 when there were enough Jews living here to warrant minyans. On holidays, services were held in the old firehouse on Main Street where one of our own members was fire chief.

Soon after, the town's first kosher butcher arrived to fill the needs of increasing numbers of Jewish families. Around this time, the Jews experienced the desire to identify themselves and mingle with each other.

The Huntington Hebrew Congregation was organized in 1907 to obtain and maintain a sanctuary for the spiritual, cultural, and social needs of the Jewish community of Huntington; to arrange and maintain a Hebrew school for the continuance of religious and cultural training; to obtain and maintain cemetery grounds for the interment of deceased members in keeping with their faith.

The Huntington Hebrew Congregation dug its first roots, and in 1911 the first shul was built in Huntington Station where it was occupied for twenty years. Then, jubilantly, the congregation watched as ground was broken on September 10, 1933 and the cornerstone was placed. The Huntington Congregation had grown; a house of religion serving God through worship and prayer; a house of study teaching the Torah to young and old; a house of assembly serving its people through cultural and social activities; a people's center serving the community as a meeting place for various causes. Throughout each year, the center provided Sabbath and High Holiday services as well daily minyans.

After the war, a building fund was established and on April 28, 1961 the congregation was invited to Sabbath services combined with the first installation service held in the congregation's new synagogue. In 1976, the Lief Chapel was dedicated. This Chapel is used for both the morning and evening minyans as well as Junior Congregation services. In keeping with the long standing tradition of providing for the continuation of cultural and social needs of the children, the Youth Lounge was erected and dedicated in 1978.

We recently enlarged and renovated the synagogue through a capital campaign that has met and exceeded its goals. The main sanctuary and social hall were renovated. There is a new Family Life Center, enlargements of our classrooms, an improved Youth area, and expansion for much needed office space.

Over the past few years, the Huntington Hebrew Congregation has been awarded many honors by national Jewish organizations Our congregation has grown to become not only a leader in local affairs but in the national Jewish community as well.

The Huntington Jewish Center recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary, and after a year long celebration, is looking forward to its next hundred years.
